Rwanda is an amazing coffee region and an even more amazing story. Ravaged by war and genocide, the country has bounced back and is producing some of the world's finest coffee.
Coffee in Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi is all produced in the highlands around the Lake Kivu area (as is the nascent industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo). Coffees here have bright floral and/or fruity aromas and silky body.
This coffee, too, is produced in this region but is even more unique. Not far offshore is a private coffee island owned and operated by a member of Rwanda's coffee board. Coffee here is grown with organic and sustainable methods under exacting standards. It is processed on island and shipped by boat to the mainland for sale. Coffee here has escaped mainland pest problems and benefits from a unique microclimate present on the island. Truly unique!
